PM Shehbaz Vows to Defend Pakistan’s Right to Indus River Water

On June 17, 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to safeguard its water rights, calling the Indus River the nation’s “lifeline” during a message marking World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought  . He voiced concern over India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, warning such unilateral moves threaten the 240 million Pakistanis dependent on its waters  . Highlighting climate change impacts—like droughts, land degradation, and extreme weather—he outlined government efforts to boost water storage, restore ecosystems, and plant over 2.2 billion trees under green initiatives  .
