Provision:

 

Inviolability of dignity of man, etc.

 

14. (1) The dignity of man and, subject to law, the privacy of home, shall be inviolable.

(2) No person shall be subjected to torture for the purpose of extracting evidence.

Meaning:

Article 14 protects every person’s dignity and privacy. The law is very clear on thefact that whoever you are, your self-respect and personal space, be it in your home or anywhere else, must be respected, but especially the privacy of your home, which cannot be invaded without a lawful reason. Moreover, the law strictly forbids the use of torture or any kind of abuse in order to extract evidence. Simply put, no one, not even the state, reserves the right to treat you in an inhumane manner. Your body, home and dignity are off limits.

Application:

For instance, if any law enforcement enters your home, searches your belongings or records any of your private conversations without a proper warrant or legal permission, that will be against the provisions of Article 14. Moreover, in this modern era, digital privacy (cell phone tapping, etc.) also falls under the ambit of this article.

Similarly, if someone is arrested, they cannot be beaten up or mentally tortured to get a confession or statement.
