Provision:
Discouragement of Parochial, Racial, Tribal, Sectarian and Provincial Prejudices
The State shall discourage parochial, racial, tribal, sectarian and provincial prejudices among the citizens.
Meaning:
Article 33 obligates the State to actively discourage all forms of prejudice that divide citizens—whether based on ethnicity, tribe, sect, or province. The goal is to foster national unity and social harmony by promoting a shared sense of belonging beyond narrow identities.
It recognises that such divisions weaken the fabric of society and hinder inclusive development and democratic progress.
Application:
When the State promotes national integration campaigns, discourages hate speech, or takes legal action against groups that incite ethnic or sectarian hatred, it is acting in line with Article 33.
Similarly, discouraging discriminatory hiring practices or biased media coverage based on regional or sectarian identities is also part of this constitutional duty. Policies or rhetoric that fuel such divisions go against the principles outlined in this Article.
